Atlantis & Mir orbited together for five days. During this time the crews practiced undocking and redocking several times. The crews performed several spacewalks (EVAs) to practice space construction techniques in preparation for the start of construction of the International Space Station in late 1997. American astronaut Shannon Lucid was scheduled to remain onboard Mir for a stay of 140 days before returning to Earth; delays launching her return Shuttle flight extended her stay to a record-setting 188 days, when she returned to Earth aboard STS79.
